Location: Squam Lake, New Hampsire
Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest, Squam Lake, southern White Mountains of NH

Leaders: John McLeod, Alex Carver, and Stephen Poston

Competed May-June 2025, as part of the Design Assembly Program run by McLeod Architects

Received a design award for Excellence in Architecture from the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter, as juried by the AIA Savannah (Georgia) chapter.
Over the course of 8 days, eleven students, three architects, and one builder took on the task of creating a community integrated architectural structure on Squam Lake, NH. Started originally by McLeod Kredell architects, this annual tradition of community based architecture led to the creation of this 2025 project:

Create a caretaker’s cabin under 100 square feet for the Squam Lakes Association with bunk beds, storage that limits pest pressure, and a “porch” area for enjoying the outdoors. Elevate the cabin to “architecture”. The cabin should be transportable by boat to Moon Island, one of the many islands on Squam Lake.

COST: Less than $5,000

Final site for the cabin on Moon Island. Squam Lakes Association.

The project was drafted and modeled by hand over three days, then constructed and installed by our small team in five days. We used materials found almost exclusively in the Holderness area of NH, milling our own pieces from white pine boards that were harvested on site. Clerestory windows were installed surrounding the entire roof system to ensure constant light into the small space. Staining various pieces brought each segment of the structure together, giving vibrancy and new life to the cabin, and joy to the future inhabitants. Lemon yellow floorboards, barn red doors and storage, and denim blue wall slats for the porch, transformed this project into a cohesive building in every detail. The design drew inspiration from Le Corbusier’s “Le Cabanon” French coast cabin and the idea of a modular unit.

The 7’ x 14’ cabin (1:2) consists of a 7’ sleeping cube (1:1), a 7’ x 4’-8” screened sitting area (2:3), and a 2’-4” x 7’ interstitial zone (1:3). 98 square feet.
